Project Profile 2:

Treatment of Leachate from a Large Commercial Composting Site:

Client: Natural World products (NWP)
Location: Keady, Co. Armagh, Northern Ireland
Date Commissioned: Late summer 2004

Enviros provided design assistance to NWP for this plant when it became clear that there was no public sewer or sewage works in the locality to which the compost slab leachate could be tankered, unless the peak strength had been reduced by pre-treatment. Efforts had already been made, and will continue, to use excess run-off for wetting the compost during hot and dry weather, and thus avoid any treatment or disposal costs.

However, experience at this plant has shown that good housekeeping alone cannot avoid the need for tankerage off-site in parts of the west of the UK, and Ireland, and that some relatively wet geographical region composting sites will require dedicated on-site leachate treatment plants.
