BORTH LANDFILL LEACHATE TREATMENT PLANT, WALES, UK
Cyngor Sir Ceredigion (Ceredigion District Council) Borth, Aberystwyth, Ceredigion Operational: April 1995 to date.
Borth landfill received wastes from the north Ceredigion area from the late 1940s until 1994.
It is situated over peat and alluvium, unlined, and surrounded by surface watercourses. Leachate management and treatment measures undertaken include a leachate cut-off and collection system, a small, tank-based leachate treatment plant, and progressive capping of the site.
Up to 30 m3/d of methanogenic leachate is being treated for direct discharge into a small watercourse. A special feature of the leachate treatment plant design is the requirement to keep plant noise levels to a very low level, as a campsite is situated less than 60m away.
