Skye and Lochalsh District Council Portree, Isle of Skye (now Highland Council) Operational: February 1996 to date.
Portree leachate treatment plant is designed to serve the needs of both the original landfill at Portree and an extension, which will provide a further 15 years of landfilling.
Until remedial works are completed on the original site, the plant will have to treat a highly variable flow (up to 130 m³ /d) to standards suitable for discharge via a 0.75 km pipeline, into the River Leasgeary. The discharge consent requires that effluent contains less than 10 mg/l of ammoniacal nitrogen and less than 20 mg/l of BOD.
Aspinwall (now Enviros) designed and supervised all aspects of the project, from feasibility studies to process commissioning.
