Client: County Environmental Services (CES), Cornwall, England Operational: Spring 1997 to date.
This 150 m ³ /day plant was a replacement for a competitor's leachate treatment plant which had been built less than three years previously, but had not met treatment quality requirements.
The plant was built after extensive nitrification, and de-nitrification, treatability trials demonstrated that denitrification was feasible.
The Client's plant operator achieves de-nitrification by careful blending of old and new leachates, using facilities built into the venturi air control system which promotes the generation of anoxic conditions for a peroid during the treatment cycle.
The storage tanks seen behind the aeration tank in the picture are used to collect suitable leachates for denitrification.
The treated leachate can be discharged to a local watercourse or to a grass irrigation plot, depending on the season.
