SUMMERSTON LEACHATE TREATMENT PLANT

City of Glasgow Cleansing Department, Summerston Landfill Site
Operational: Spring 1990 to date
Location: 4 km north of Glasgow.

Summerston is a very large, baled waste landfill located north of Glasgow within a large meander of the River Kelvin. Treatment of leachate to the required standards for discharge to the river is accomplished using an HDPE lined lagoon, containing floating surface aerators.

The plant is automated using a simple microprocessor, and successfully reduces concentrations of ammoniacal-N from up to 2,000 to less than 50 mg/l. Aspinwall (now part of Enviros) prepared all detailed design drawings and specifications, and supervised construction of the plant.

Why do we continue to display case studies of such old sites?
We agree that they are far from the “cutting edge”, and certainly not “state of the art” for the UK, and elsewhere. Nevertheless, the site owners continue to use them, and when asked we continue to provide support. Such designs continue to be appropriate for some projects, and in some countries.
