HAREWOOD WHIN LANDFILL SITE LEACHATE TREATMENT PLANT

Location: Rufforth, York, England
Operator: North Yorkshire County Council (now Yorwaste)
Operational: May 1990 to date.
Harewood Whin Leachate Treatment Plant consists of two identical extended aeration SBR lagoons, designed to provide treatment for a range of leachate flows of up to 200 m3/d.

Discharge of pre-treated leachate via a 4 km pipeline to the City of York sewerage system, is controlled automatically by radio telemetry, which prevents discharge of effluent when the sewer is surcharged. Discharges to sewer are governed by a load based consent related to BOD, and an ammoniacal nitrogen consent limit of 100 mg/l.

We continued to work in 2003, for this client (Yorwaste) to design a further leachate treatment plant at another of the landfill sites they operate. This commission was carried out in collaboration with ENCIA Consultants, and JNB (civil engineering contractors).

Why do we continue to display case studies of such old sites?
We agree that they are far from the “cutting edge”, and certainly not “state of the art” for the UK, and elsewhere. Nevertheless, the site owners continue to use them, and when asked we continue to provide support. Such designs continue to be appropriate for some projects, and in some countries.
