The original Lagoon Type Leachate Treatment Plants (16 No. sites)

GREENGAIRS LANDFILL LEACHATE TREATMENT PLANT

Operator: Shanks & McEwan (now Shanks. Waste Services)
Location: Greengairs, near Airdrie, Strathclyde, Scotland
Operational: Spring 1991 to date.

Greengairs Landfill Site occupies an area of 280 ha, that was previously mined for coal and fireclay by deep and opencast techniques.

A twin lagoon extended aeration biological treatment plant - designed, tendered, construction supervised and process commissioned by Aspinwall (now Enviros) is used to remove the majority of the polluting contaminants from the leachate.

Final polishing of effluent to standards suitable for discharge to the Cameron Burn, is accomplished by a reed bed treatment system.

The stringent conditions set originally by the Clyde River Purification Board, allow the discharge of up to 200 m3/day of effluent containing less than 5 mg/l of ammoniacal nitrogen.

Why do we continue to display case studies of such old sites?
We agree that they are far from the “cutting edge”, and certainly not “state of the art” for the UK, and elsewhere. Nevertheless, the site owners continue to use them, and when asked we continue to provide support. Such designs continue to be appropriate for some projects, and in some countries.
