Reed Beds for the Treatment of Leachates, and Dilute Leachate Contaminated Groundwater

Member

Enviros Consulting has developed expertise in the use of reed beds for polishing strong leachate effluents after biological SBR treatment, and in the treatment of leachate contaminated groundwater.

Monument Hill Reed Bed

Constructed 1996
Location: Near Devizes, Wiltshire, UK

This reed bed successfully treats leachate from an old closed landfill, and is primarily intended to remove iron. However, extended studies of the site hydrochemistry have shown that very low level residual organic pesticides and herbicides are also being consistently removed.

The reed bed is sited over the landfill, and shows that it is possible to locate artificial wetlands on the stabilised and pre-lined surface of landfills.
